When discussing beer kits online in this article I’m not going to get into the whole beer brewing process in detail, there’s plenty of sites out there that will do that.  I will however describe the kits, and a general overview of the time line and process that making beer with that particular type of kit entails.  I believe in this way you’ll be able to decide which of the many beer kits available online is right for you.

Coopers is one of the finest beer kits you'll find online

These are the most expensive beer kits you’ll find online.  They’re also the most ‘complete’ offering the full ‘beer making’ experience.  They are more complicated to use and require more steps to arrive at the finished product.  They are just about all inclusive meaning you won’t need to supply anything except a large pot.

They consist of the following items:

  • Primary fermenter
  • Secondary fermenter
  • Airlock and tubing
  • Bottling machine
  • Bottles and Caps

There are a few more minor items but they’ll vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The process of making beer with a kit like this is as follows (I’m not going to go into too much detail here, I only want to give an overview of what’s involved)

  1. First off you’ll combine the ingredients and boil them for about an hour, this is called the wort.
  2. Next the wort and some additional cold water is put in the primary fermenter.  At this point you’ll also add the yeast.  It’s then sealed and the airlock placed on top.  The wort will ferment here for about a week, or until the bubbling stops.
  3. Next the wort is drained from the primary fermentor into the secondary.  The purpose of this is to stir everything up, thus causing the yeast to get every last drop of sugar and completing the fermenting process.  This secondary fermentation can last up to a week.
  4. Finally you’re ready for bottling.  The secondary fermentor is placed on a table and tubing with a valve is used to fill the bottles.  A small amount of white sugar is placed in each bottle to cause a small fermentation to occur, thus producing carbonation.

The bottles should be stored in a cool, dark place for at least a week for that last fermentation and carbonation to complete, even better is a few months.  After all this you can finally enjoy your beer.

Every item used in this process needs to be sterilized.  The total time line is about 3 weeks to a month.

Full size beer kits that you get online usually make about 5 gallons of beer at a time, or about 4 cases.

Starter beer kits online

There is available what I call a starter kit.  It’s a fully capable kit in it’s own right but the process is a bit more streamlined and it only makes about 2 gallons of beer at a time.  I consider this a fantastic way to get into the hobby without too much investment of time and money.  I’m talking about the Mr Beer system.  Let’s take a closer look at this.

The Mr Beer system is an easy, inexpensive way to make beer at home

The materials included with the kit are the same as with the full size kit, minus the secondary fermentor and the airlock assembly.

The process of making beer with this kit is a bit shorter and easier to do.

  1. First off, like with the full size beer kit, you’ll combine all the ingredients and boil for about an hour.
  2. Next you’ll pour the wort into the fermentor, add the yeast and seal it.  The airlock is built in.
  3. After the fermentation stops, which will be about a week, you can attach the tubing and start bottling by filling each bottle and adding a touch of sugar.

And that’s it, there’s no secondary fermentation.  This is much quicker, much less expensive and essentially makes the same beer.  There’s one caution I want to add…

As the yeast ferments the wort there will be some build up of ‘sludge’ on the bottom of the fermentor.  In the full size kit when you move to the second fermentor you leave this behind.  In the Mr. Beer kit however, you don’t so it’s vitally important that you don’t disturb this otherwise you’ll get a ‘yeasty’ tasting beer.  When bottling you must be gentle with it and also, you can’t drain all the beer out, you’ll have to leave about an inch or so.  This is easy to do, you’ll just have to pay attention when you get to this part of the process.

So there you have it, there are two main types of beer kits online; the full size kit and the ‘starter’ kit.  I absolutely recommend the Mr Beer kit, especially if you’re unsure if you want to do this or if you’ll be giving this as a gift.

I’ve linked the best, highest rated beer kits below.  Take a good look at them and decide which of these beer kits online is best for you.
