This Sharp microwave convection oven is higly rated and quite popular

When it comes to cooking fast nothing beats a convection microwave oven, throw in a stainless steel finish and you have perhaps the finest kitchen appliance introduced in the last 10 years.  A stainless steel convection microwave oven is the best of both worlds, it’s an oven, and it’s a microwave.  Nothing really beats the cooking speed or the convenience.  If you’re in the market for one of fine appliances then you’ve probably noticed dozens of different companies out there making them, this is good, and this is bad.  Competition means better prices, but unfortunately finding the best stainless steel convection microwave combo might be difficult if you don’t know what features to look for, or even what features you really need.  In this article I’ll go over some of the more common features you’ll find out there, and also tell you exactly what they mean to you.  After that I’ll link some fine examples of highly rated top quality stainless steel microwave ovens.

Features to look for on a good convection microwave combo oven

When it comes to choosing a good microwave convection oven there are two main things you need to decide on; size and power.  The size of the oven will determine how much food you can cook at one time and the power will determine how fast you’ll cook it.

First let’s look at size.  In the following table I’ll show the number of people you want to cook for, and the approximate size of microwave you should get.

* 1 person – 0.5 to 0.8 cubic feet
* 2 people – 0.9 to 1.3 cubic feet
* 3 people – 1.4 to 1.6 cubic feet
* 4 people – 1.8 to 2.0 cubic feet

Based on these numbers you should be able to get a good idea of what size microwave convection oven you should get.  These aren’t written in stone however, you’re always free to get a larger one.

Now let’s look at power rating.  You’ll find many stainless steel microwave convection ovens out there rated between 600 watts and over 1300 watts.  Obviously the more wattage, the faster the microwave combo oven will cook, and of course, the more expensive it’ll be.  Keep in mind that many recipes time requirements are based on microwaves in the 800 watt range.

Now that we have the two most important things out of the way let’s look at some of the features available out there.

What features should I look for in a good stainless steel microwave convection oven?

For even cooking you should absolutely choose a combo microwave convection oven that features a turntable inside.  Having one of these means cooking and browning your food evenly.  This is absolutely a must when cooking large pieces of meat, such as turkeys.

I’d also look for one that has a temperature probe.  Once again, just like a normal oven having one of these means you’ll be able to set the target internal temperature of what you’re cooking and the oven will turn off when the food has reached that temperature.  Having this feature means you won’t have to check the internal temp every 1/2 hour, this adds to the convenience factor.

Look for programmable functions, by this I mean the ability to program defrost for a set amount of time, followed by microwave, then convection for browning and finishing with a simmer, or keep warm mode.  Having this will allow you to ‘dial in’ all the stages of cooking at one time without worrying about overcooking or under cooking your meal.  This feature takes a bit of practice but after a while you’ll get to that ‘set it and forget it’ level.

When it comes to controls I like controls that have a plastic coating to keep food and grease out, remember, with convection cooking there can, and often will, be some splatter and mess, there’s just no getting around that.

Now I’ll link a few top notch stainless steel microwave convection ovens, these are all highly rated and fit the bill perfectly.
