Exercise Tips for Older Adults

Older adults need to exercise too!

Exercise doesn’t stop at 40; it should be something you do for your entire life.  There’s no reason to let yourself go once you hit middle age, in fact, you have several things going for you like dedication and focus.  Follow these exercise tips geared towards older adults to succeed at getting back into shape.  Remember, life begins at 40!

One of the most important tips I can give older adults, even before exercise begins is clear your mind from any misconceptions about what is possible at your age.  Proper motivation is a key exercise tip for older adults.

When it comes to exercise tips for older adults it has to be said that we just can’t perform like we could when we were 20, so don’t even try.  Our joints and ligaments just can’t handle weights like we once could.  Start with lighter weight but increased reps to avoid injury.

This is one of those exercise tips that should not be ignored by older adults.  Make sure you stretch and warm up before you start your exercise program for the day.  This will help you avoid injury and also get the most out of your workout.

To get the best results you do NOT have to spend all day in the gym, fact is, who has the time for that anyway.  Work on one or two body parts and get out of there.  Any more and you risk injury.  Don’t listen to exercise tips directed at 20 something’s, they aren’t for you.

Two important exercise tips that older adults shouldn’t ignore.  First, get plenty of sleep as muscle only grows while sleeping.  Second, as older adults we produce less testosterone than we did in our 20s so take a good multivitamin every day.

To grow muscle you need a calorie surplus, to lose weight you need a calorie deficit.  So adjust your food intake accordingly.  Also, make sure you add protein supplements to your diet to give you an edge.  Most experts recommend 1.5 grams per pound of body weight.

Some other exercise tips that are important for older adults are to do some cardio a few times a week.  This is really good for the heart and lungs and is generally good for you all around.  Also, keep a journal, this is great for motivation especially when you can see your progress.  And finally, stay hydrated and drink lots of water.
