A warm winter coat should look good too!

With the dead of winter fast approaching now is the time to consider a new warm winter coat, especially if you were unhappy with the performance of the winter coat you have now. Winter coats have come a long way in both style and function in recent years, but the tried and true styles and materials, down filled, wool or leather are still the best choices when it comes to getting a warm winter coat.  Here are some important things to consider when you’re out shopping for a new warm winter coat.

Whats the best style of a warm winter coat?

The first thing you need to consider when it comes to finding a great warm winter coat is the difference between a jacket and a coat.  A jacket rests at the hips and is almost useless when it comes to keeping you warm, as the cold wind can go right up your waste line. Winter coats go down to about the knees.  Also, it is difficult or impossible to wear a thick sweater under a jacket since they usually fit tighter.

You should consider the style. A huge parka may keep you nice and toasty, but might be a bit inappropriate for the office or a night out on the town.  Use the parka for shoveling snow or daily activities, a dressier winter coat is far better for business or pleasure situations. Consider a Pea coat, or an officers top coat.  Many different styles of a warm winter coat are out there that are a bit dressier.

What material is best for a warm winter coat?

The material is important of course, after all, a warm winter coat should keep you warm.  Wool and cashmere are the best at keeping you warm. Cashmere is expensive but not very durable. Wool winter coats, preferably with a layer of thinsulate are the best at keeping you warm.  Leather winter coats look great but don’t breathe very well, and are sometimes difficult to ‘seal’  if they have buttons, so keep that in mind.

Consider the fit, when you go shopping for a warm winter coat wear a sport coat or thick sweater since on the coldest days or at work that’s what you’ll be wearing.  When trying on a winter coat, move around and check for binding, remember you have to perform in it, whether shoveling the snow or even just tying your shoes,  you need to be able to move around in it.  A good, top quality warm winter coat should be comfortable.

Remember, when all is said and done, you have to look good, feel good and stay warm!  There are many styles and materials of warm winter coats out there so stay open minded and consider your options.

When you’re ready to go out and buy a warm winter coat don’t hesitate to read winter coat reviews on sites like ConsumerSearch or even on Amazon.  They have reviews of winter coats written by people just like yourself and can make the search just a bit easier.
