Turning 40 doesn’t automatically mean you should give up on your appearance and let yourself go.  As soon as you begin to think like an old man, you ARE an old man.  Follow these fitness tips geared towards older adults and, with some dedication and a bit of effort you can get back in shape and look better than you ever have!

One of the most important fitness tips I can give to older adults is motivation.  It’s easy to look in the mirror and say to yourself “I’ll never get back into shape”  or “I’m just too old for this”  This is utter nonsense.  Find some motivational items and surround yourself with them, such as a picture of yourself when you were young and fit.

Start a workout program again, but take it real slow.  No matter how much we don’t want to hear it the fact is our joint and ligaments just can’t take heavy weights like we could at 20.  Increase reps but keep the weight low to avoid injury.

More important than ever you must limber up and stretch before working out.  Older adults take more time to warm up so don’t rush it.  This is one of those fitness tips that should not be ignored.

Don’t fall victim to the media or even your friends.  The fact is you do NOT have to spend hours in the gym to get results.  Work on one or two body parts and get out of there.  Remember, light weight, high reps for the best results.

Muscle only grows while you sleep, not when you’re in the gym, so make sure you get enough sleep.  This is one of those fitness tips that shouldn’t be ignored by older adults.

Take vitamins.  One thing for sure is, as older adults we produce less testosterone, by taking a good multivitamin we can at least partially overcome this.

Eat 5 or even 6 meals a day to grow muscle.  The only way to grow muscle is to have a calorie surplus so eat at least 5 solid meals a day.  If you feel you’re overweight then shoot for a calorie deficit.

Try to supplement your diet with protein.  Experts recommend 1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight.  Fitness tips like this are important for older adults if they really want to get in shape.  We need every advantage we can get to succeed.

Other Fitness Tips for Older Adults

  1. 1.  Make sure you do cardio a few times a week. There are so many benefits to doing this. It will strengthen your heart and lungs and will even aid in recovery after your workout. Start with walking on a treadmill and gradually increase the intensity. It will improve your workouts to.
  2. 2.  Try to keep a journal of your workout progress; every exercise, weight used, reps and rest time. Continually strive to do better. Don’t over exert yourself, take it slow. With a journal you’ll be able to see where you are succeeding and where you aren’t. You can also see your strength increasing, this is one of those fitness tips that older adults can use to stay motivated.
  3. While working out or doing cardio it is important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water!

It goes without saying that before following these fitness tips for older adults that you should always consult with your physician to make sure this is something that is safe for you to do.
