Choosing your first outdoor barbeque pit can be a tough task indeed.  There are literally hundreds of manufacturers producing barbeque pits of every imaginable shape and size, not to mention price range.  You should consider the price, quality, required capacity, required attention and the type of fuel you want to use before you buy an outdoor barbeque pit.

What fuel should I use?  Best Outdoor Barbeque Pit

The first thing you need to do is decide what kind of fuel you want to use.  Outdoor barbeque pits are available in gas, charcoal and even electric models.   Each type has advantages and disadvantages.

  • Charcoal barbeque pits run cheap, but require lots of attention to keep the fire going and even need to be refueled during long cook sessions.
  • Gas or propane outdoor barbeque pits run clean and cheap, but some would argue that this isn’t really barbeque and certainly lacks that barbeque flavor.
  • Electric is cheap and clean, but again, is it real barbeque?

Consider the amount of space you have available, obviously you don’t want to purchase a huge outdoor barbeque pit if you plan on putting it on your balcony.  On the other hand a small portable bbq smoker may be a bit inadequate if you plan on cooking for large numbers of people.

Smokers, depending on the fuel you are using, require a certain amount of attention. Electric ones are  ‘set it and forget it’ while charcoal smokers require lots of attention as the temperature can change due to wind, direct sunlight or even as the meat inside heats up, not too mention refueling as the coals burn out.

If you only plan on cooking for your family a small outdoor barbeque pit is more than enough.  If you plan on cooking for parties or in bulk, a larger pit will be needed.

Quality varies out there, you need to look for a good, steel, thick walled barbeque pit.  The thicker the steel, the better the smoker will hold it’s temperature, and consistent low temperature is crucial for

great barbeque.  Also, some cheaper models are very ‘leaky’ and are quite difficult to adjust the cooking temperature.  BBQ pits that are tuned are the best, but of course will cost more.

I’ve linked below two of the best outdoor barbeque smokers available for home use (pictured above).  The Bradley electric is, in my opinion, the finest electric smoker available to day, it’s simply amazing and convenient.  The Weber smokey mountain is a top notch smoker, it’s even routinely used by the pros during barbeque competitions.  These are both available on Amazon at a great price.
