I think most everyone can agree that an essential skill that needs to be learned as an adult is how to make good coffee. There is no greater joy than a good cup of coffee in the morning, and, on the other side of the coin, there’s no greater letdown than a horrible cup of coffee. Read on to learn the steps on how to make good coffee every time.
Only with good coffee beans can you make a good cup of coffee. Don’t cheap out and get those supermarket brands for less than $4 a pound. I want to point out that I said beans, not pre-ground coffee. Get some good coffee beans and a coffee grinder and you’ll be well on your way to learn how to make some good coffee for yourself.
Once you have some good coffee beans you’ll need to grind them. A burr grinder is far superior to a mill grinder as it produces a grind of uniform size. Each type of coffee machine from a French press to a common drip style has it’s own requirements for grind size. A good burr grinder will have settings depending on the machine type you’ll be using.
Once again, if you really want to learn how to make a good cup of coffee invest in good beans and a burr grinder, you’ll be rewarded for this.
Now that the beans are ground let’s talk about the water. You want cool, fresh water, it doesn’t have to be filtered or distilled or any of that nonsense. Bring it to a boil then add it to your machine (let it rest for a few seconds before adding it to bring the temperature down just a few degrees). You’re shooting for 190 – 205 degrees. Note: If your machine heats the water for you make sure it can hit this critical temperature range, if it can’t you just won’t get the full flavor of the coffee.
Add the water to the machine and operate it according to the directions. Now, if you have an automatic coffee maker it cannot, by design, make a really good cup of coffee as you need to steep the grinds in the coffee for a few minutes, the drip type of machine allows the water to pass through too fast, thus cheating you of flavor. A French press is by far the superior machine for this. If you really want to learn how to make a good cup of coffee look into getting the (very) inexpensive machine.
Now here’s a very important point. If you want to learn how to make good coffee you need to finish the process by NOT allowing the coffee to rest on the warming plate for more than 5 minutes, after this time the coffee will start to develop bitterness. This is why the first cup every morning tastes the best, by the time you reach for the second bitterness has already set in. Invest in an insulated carafe to store the brewed coffee in.
To summarize you’ll need the following items to learn how to make a good cup of coffee
- Good quality whole coffee beans
- A burr grinder that allows you to adjust the grind size
- A quality machine, French press is the best
- A carafe to store the coffee in
So there you have it. If you really want to learn how to make good coffee than the steps are easy, the equipment is really what matters. Don’t cheat yourself, or fool yourself into believing cheap pre-ground coffee in a drip coffee maker will result in anything other than a mediocre cup of joe.
